In a candid GQ interview, Mulaney reveals how his wife, Olivia Munn, played a crucial role in his sobriety, including administering random drug tests to help him stay on track.
John Mulaney, the Emmy-winning comedian, has opened up about his personal journey of sobriety, revealing how his wife, Olivia Munn, has been an integral part of his recovery. In a new feature for GQ’s Men of the Year cover story, Mulaney reflects on how Munn, during her pregnancy with their son Malcolm, took an active role in supporting his sobriety, even administering random drug tests as part of a routine they continue today.
Mulaney, who will celebrate four years of sobriety next month, was in rehab from December 2020 to February 2021, struggling with addiction to substances like cocaine, Adderall, and Percocet. While Mulaney’s intervention, famously orchestrated by friends like Fred Armisen and Seth Meyers, has become part of Hollywood lore, Munn’s involvement took a more personal and hands-on approach. At six months pregnant, Munn staged her own intervention, and together they decided that random drug tests would be part of their journey.
“I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind. Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence,” Mulaney told GQ. For him, the random drug tests provided reassurance and allowed him to feel grounded in his commitment to stay sober.
Munn echoed the sentiment, explaining how Mulaney’s recovery felt like watching someone “newly sober, at the edge of a cliff.” She admits that it was a challenging time for both of them, but witnessing Mulaney’s growth in his sobriety gave her a sense of hope.
Their relationship, which began on more of a professional level, blossomed after Mulaney’s recovery. Munn revealed that they barely knew each other when she became pregnant, but the news of their impending son changed everything. They decided to raise their child together, and soon after, Mulaney’s life and career began to flourish once again.
In addition to his personal milestones, Mulaney’s career continues to soar. After a successful six-night run of his Netflix talk show Everybody’s in L.A., he is set to return to Broadway this December for a five-week run in All In: Comedy About Love. This new venture follows several career offers, including hosting The Daily Show and next year’s Academy Awards.
Amid all the professional success, Mulaney remains deeply grateful for the support he’s received from his family, especially Munn, who not only helped him through his darkest moments but has also shared her own challenges, including her battle with breast cancer.
As Mulaney moves forward in both his personal life and career, he continues to rely on the unwavering support of Munn, proving that with the right people by your side, recovery is not just a possibility—it’s a reality.
