Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig takes the crown in a groundbreaking victory, shining a spotlight on animal advocacy and empowering young women globally
Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, 21, has made history by becoming the first-ever Miss Denmark to win the coveted Miss Universe title. The exciting moment unfolded on Saturday night during the 73rd edition of the Miss Universe competition, held in Mexico City. In a heartwarming video shared on the event’s official Instagram, Kjaer’s joy was palpable as she exclaimed, “Miss Universe!” upon hearing the announcement, jumping with excitement as she received her crown.
A passionate animal protection advocate and entrepreneur, Kjaer also boasts a background as a former professional dancer. Her advocacy for animal rights and empowerment is expected to be at the heart of her platform during her reign. Reflecting on her historic win the morning after, Kjaer shared a glimpse of her new reality, posting an image in a hotel bathrobe with her Miss Universe sash and crown. “First sunrise as Miss Universe,” she wrote, “Waking up with gratitude, dreams, and a crown − ready to embrace this incredible journey.”
Kjaer finished ahead of the competition, with Miss Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, named first runner-up. The top five also included Miss Mexico Maria Fernanda Beltran Figueroa, Miss Thailand Opal Suchata Chuangsri, and Miss Venezuela Ileana Marquez Pedroza.
The event, hosted in Mexico City for the first time in 17 years, was a star-studded celebration of global beauty and diversity. Television personality Mario López and Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo served as hosts, with commentary by Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and Zuri Hall.
Amidst the celebration, the pageant was also marked by controversy, as Miss USA Alma Cooper did not place after a tumultuous year in which her predecessor resigned. Nevertheless, Kjaer’s historic victory stands as a monumental achievement, not only for Denmark but for women around the world.
